Subject: Use of the OPE ID on All Correspondence Submitted to the Direct Loan Servicing Center

Dear Partner,

Beginning May 30, 2000, please include the eight digit Office of Postsecondary Education Identification Number (OPE ID) on all correspondence you submit to the Direct Loan Servicing Center (DLSC). This number will expedite processing.

We chose the OPE ID as a result of your request for consistency in the use of school identification numbers.

To assist in implementing this new practice for deferment and forbearance requests, we have made the OPE ID the standard school identification number on all Direct Loan deferment and forbearance requests that require school certification. The revised deferment and forbearance requests will be available shortly on the Direct Loan Servicing web site at
www.dlservicer.ed.gov, on the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) web site at www.ifap.ed.gov, and in a separate Direct Loan Bulletin.

If you have questions, please call the Direct Loan Servicing Center School Services Department at 1/888/877-7658. Hearing impaired individuals who have access to a TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) should call 1/800/848-0983.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in the Direct Loan Program.

Sincerely,

Margaret E. White
