Subject: New Window for Year 2000 Testing – July 12 through August 20, 1999

Dear Colleague:

This bulletin reminds you that the second time period for Direct Loan Origination Year 2000 testing with Direct Loan schools began July 12 and will continue through August 20. The bulletin follows up on DLB 99-18 and offers some tips for conducting the testing.

Access the Web and Specific Y2K Test Plan

Go to the Department of Education Web site at www.ed.gov
Scroll down on the left to the Year 2000 Computers Icon. Mouse click to enter the Y2K subdirectory.
Click on “Events.”
Go to the “Testing” subset and click on “School Testing.”
Go to 2.4.1.4 Direct Loan Origination/Consolidation (DLOS/CD) and highlight “Test Plan.” You will find a detailed plan to test 98-99 and 99-00 information for the Year 2000.

Use the recommended SSN scenario. First digit (0)/next five digits are your school code (12345)/ the last three are sequence numbers, e.g., (001,002,003).

Set up a Y2K test directory in EDconn32

Set up a User ID specifically for Y2K testing.
To set up a User Group for Y2K testing, do the following:
Open the Security View in EDconn32.
Highlight the Group you wish to put your test user in.
Go to Record Insert.
Enter the Name and other user information on the “Identification” Window.
Click next, then s.
On the Directories tab, specify your send and receive paths. (Note: Be sure to use a directory other than your production directory).
Proceed with the rest of the user setup.
When you wish to perform test transmissions, log into your test User ID.

That way, you may edit your Message Class table within Message Class Manager View.

Specify a directory name for all Y2K test message classes:

Open Message Class Manager View.
Scroll to the right until you find the “File Name” column.
For each Y2K message class you plan to use, edit the File Name to point to your test directory.
Save the edited Message Class Manager.

Note: To take advantage of the directory name listed in Message Class Manager, you must not have Send/Receive paths set up in your User Properties. Ensure that the “Send” and “Receive” sections of your User Properties (found on the Directories tab) are blank.

You must use the following message classes, which are already set up with TIVWAN.
