McCormick will be leaving the Department of Education on July 2, 1999, to accept a position with the University of Phoenix in its Washington, D. C. office as Vice President of National Affairs. Joe takes with him a wealth of experience in student financial assistance. He began his career as a financial aid counselor at West Texas University, then served as the financial aid director at three universities. He went on to create the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation and served as president and CEO from 1980 to 1992. From 1993 to 1995, he was executive director of the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education. Prior to becoming Chair of the Direct Loan Task Force in December 1996, Joe served as the Departments Direct Loan Liaison Officer and as a special assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Student Financial Assistance Programs. He also managed the Departments Guarantor and Lender Oversight Service. From 1987 to 1994, Joe was a charter member of the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance, a Congressionally-mandated committee providing advice to the Congress and Secretary of Education. He served a one-year term as president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators in 1977-78 and as president of the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs in 1986-87. We know the University of Phoenix will benefit from his expertise, and we wish Joe all the best in his new endeavor.
