Subject: Scheduled Downtime at the Loan Origination Center

Dear Colleague:

I am writing to notify you of a shutdown in the Loan Origination Center (LOC) in Montgomery for a five day period from March 1 to 5, 1999. The last GET from the TIV WAN will be on February 26; the next processing and PUT will occur on Monday, March 8, 1999.

It is necessary that the LOC be inaccessible to schools for this period of time in order to implement 1999-2000 software modifications to the production system. This particular week in March coincides with the slowest volume period in Montgomery.

We apologize for this inconvenience. However, after considering different options, the Department of Education determined that this shutdown is the best option to assure that the software modifications will be implemented in the shortest period of time and with the best assurance that all changes will go into production under control. The changes are major, involving modifications to some of the largest tables on the loan origination system, data population activities, system backups, and a production cycle.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Direct Loan Program.

Sincerely,

Joe L. McCormick
