PublicationDate: 9/1/98 BulletinID: DLB - 98 - 35 September 1998 DLB-98-35 Subject: 1998-99 Direct Loan Publications Availability Schedule Dear Colleague: We want to let you know of our schedule in updating Direct Loan publications. The 1998-99 Direct Loan School Guide is now available, and each financial aid office should receive one copy. The 1998-99 Repayment Book and counseling materials for borrowers and counselors are being revised. The Repayment Book will go to print soon and should be available in mid-November. The counseling guides will be available in early January. You may continue to use the 1997-98 Repayment Book and other counseling materials that you received during the 1997-98 school year until the new materials are available. The major changes in the 1998-99 Repayment Book are modifications of certain tables and charts. The revised charts include: Examples of Debt Levels, Beginning Monthly Payments, and Total Amounts Repaid for All Direct Loan Repayment Plans; Constant Multiplier Charts; Chart E: Income Percentage Factors; and Chart F: Poverty Guidelines. The four charts and an order form are attached to this bulletin and will be posted to the Direct Loan web site at http://www.ed.gov/DirectLoan. Please remember that you can find all Direct Loan publications on this site as well. The following publications are scheduled for revision in July 1999: * All About Direct Loans - provides borrowers with detailed information about the Direct Loan Program, including the types of Direct Loans, loan disbursement procedures, repayment options, and loan consolidation. * Direct Loans: A Better Way to Borrow -- provides a brief overview of the Direct Loan Program and includes information on application procedures, loan limits and a brief description of the repayment options. It also describes the advantages of Direct Loans for student and parent borrowers, schools, and taxpayers. * Plus Basics - provides information for parent borrowers and includes the definition of a dependent student, eligibility criteria, repayment options, and loan consolidation. We will advise you as the new materials become available. We hope that you find these publications helpful and thank you for your ongoing support of the Direct Loan Program. Sincerely, Joe L.
