Subject: Year 2000 Survey -- Higher Education Community

Dear Colleague:

At the Department of Education, the preparation of our computer systems -- and those of our customers -- for the Year 2000 is a top priority. Over the past year, we have made great strides in preparing our organization for the millennium change. We want to learn now how we can better support your ongoing efforts.

Therefore, we ask that the person at your institution with the greatest knowledge of your internal Year 2000 computer project complete the attached survey and return it by fax or mail.

The survey is intended to give the Department a better understanding of the Year 2000 related challenges facing your institution and the current status of your Year 2000 preparations. This information will not be used for the purpose of regulatory oversight or sanction. Information gained from the survey may be useful to the Department and members of Congress in determining the impact that potentially mandated systems changes would have on institutions' Year 2000 projects. Any publication of this survey information will be in the form of statistical and anecdotal data and will not reveal either the name or resident state of any individual institution.

Please reply by fax or mail to: Direct Loan Origination Center
P.O. Box 5692
Montgomery, Ala. 36103-5692
FAX 1-800-557-7396

We are anxious to receive your completed survey. If we do not receive your reply by July 31, 1998, your loan origination customer service representative will contact you and ask you to complete the survey by phone.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Joe L. McCormick, Chair
Direct Loan Task Force
