URGENT - IMPORTANT TRAINING

SUMMARY: This bulletin announces a series of workshops for Direct Loan schools on Direct Loan Cash
Management and Data Matching (Reconciliation).

Dear Colleague:

As a participant in the William D. Ford Federal
Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans), you are
invited to attend our 1996 training on cash
management and data matching processes and
procedures for Direct Loans. This training will
cover essential concepts that are vital to your
institution's success in administering the Direct
Loan Program.

Training Objectives

These two-day training sessions are designed to
help you better understand the Direct Loan
"reconciliation" process and assist you in
completing the necessary data match.
Additionally, this training will address cash
management guidelines and other related issues.

The training sessions will be structured as
follows:

Day 1 9:00 am - 12:00 noon Review of the
Direct Loan process: Loan Origination
Records, Promissory Notes and
Disbursement Records

1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Data
Matching and Cash Management

Day 2 9:00 am - 12:00 noon Data Matching
and Cash Management (continued)

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Problem
Resolution/Round Table Discussion

This training is for all Direct Loan schools,
whether you use EDExpress on a PC or in
combination with a mainframe system, use a
mainframe exclusively, or use other software.
You should bring your issues and problems with
you so that they can be addressed during the
course of the training.

Who Should Attend

All staff who are directly involved in the data
matching and cash management (reconciliation)
processes should attend, including:

- Financial Aid staff
- Business/Fiscal/Accounting Office staff
- System/Computer staff

Schools that use third-party servicers should also
encourage the servicer's Direct Loan
representative(s) to attend.

Registration Information

Registration information is enclosed. Each
participant from your school must register in
advance for the training; we are unable to
accommodate walk-ins. Please feel free to
duplicate the enclosed registration form. The
registration form should be FAXed to the contact
listed for the training session you wish to attend.
Please FAX the form at least two weeks prior to
the workshop to ensure timely confirmation of
space availability. Do not make travel plans
before receiving written confirmation, as the
Department of Education cannot be responsible
for any expense you may incur for advance ticket
purchases.

These training sessions are free. However,
participants are responsible for their own
transportation, meals, and overnight
accommodations. If you need additional
information on the training, please call the
contact listed on the enclosed schedule at the
location you wish to attend.

We look forward to seeing you at one of the
upcoming training sessions.

Sincerely,

Diane M. Voigt
