SUMMARY: Rescheduling of Multiple Servicer Start-Up for the
Direct Loan Program

Dear Colleague:

The Department of Education has rescheduled implementation of
Multiple Loan Servicers.until later this summer. The original
implementation date was July 8.

Please note that schools and borrowers should experience no impact
from this change as the current loan servicer, Computer Data
Systems, Inc./Academic Financial Services Association Data Corp.
(CDSI/AFSA) has sufficient capacity to service loans during this
period.

Our decision to reschedule implementation was made only after we
had determined that additional testing was necessary to insure
successful start-up, and rescheduling would not inconvenience our
customers.

The Department has added another phase to the already extensive
test schedule to include end-to-end testing, from Loan
Origination, through the Central Database, to Loan Servicing. This
additional testing will also test all interfaces, including the National
Student Loan Data System and EDExpress. This more extensive test
protocol will benefit you as it will enhance the quality of services we
provide when the system is implemented later in the summer.

Again, please be assured that this schedule change will have no
affect on either current or new borrowers or on institutions. The
current Loan Servicer, CDSI/AFSA, will continue to receive
additional loans and borrowers until the Multiple Loan Servicers
achieve start-up.

We will be in contact with you again in early summer to provide you
with additional information about the multiple loan servicers. As
always, we appreciate your cooperation and assistance.

Sincerely,

Joe L. McCormick, Chair Jerry Rusamano, Director
Direct Loan Task Force Program Systems Service
