General availability of National Student Loan Database System (NSLDS®) Post-screening functionality
Note

May 15, 2025 Update: On May 8, the Department noted an error affecting a subset of ISIRs that caused NSLDS post-screening data to appear based on an earlier transaction instead of the most recent transaction. On May 12, the Department fixed the error and delivered corrected ISIRs with a new transaction number with the FPS Correction Reason of “NSLDS Postscreening.

May 8, 2025 Update: Earlier this week, we implemented NSLDS post-screening functionality and delivered updated 2024-25 and 2025-26 FAFSA records to SAIG mailboxes. While many records were processed correctly, in some cases where a student had multiple transactions, an error caused the NSLDS post-screening data to appear based on an earlier transaction instead of the most recent transaction. As a result, for some students, the records with post-screening data delivered this week do not reflect corrections or other updates made after the initial transaction. The Department is working to correct these records based on the student’s most recent ISIR transaction (excluding this week's post-screening ISIRs) as quickly as possible. In the meantime, FAAs should be sure to review a student’s full record before resolving awards and disbursements based on NSLDS post-screening data received this week. New ISIRs with a new transaction number will be delivered in the coming days. The new transactions will contain the FPS Correction Reason of “NSLDS Postscreening.”  We will post an update when the delivery of the corrected records is complete.

May 5, 2025 Update: Weekly processing of NSLDS post-screening data has resumed. Starting this week, institutions will receive ISIRs for 2024-25 and 2025-26 with post-screening codes per the guidance in the announcement below. Given the large volume of ISIRs initially being delivered, institutions will likely receive ISIRs throughout the week.

In July 2024, the Department announced that it would resume automated NSLDS post screening for the 2024–25 and 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) cycles in spring 2025. We understand that this delay has created challenges, and we appreciate your patience as we work to release this functionality.

The Department expects to resume the processing of post-screening data on Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) for all institutions the week of May 5, 2025. To prepare for this general release, the Department is conducting a beta test with a small group of pre-selected institutions during the week of April 28. If no major issues are found, we plan to resume post screening for all institutions the week after and will post an update to this announcement to confirm that timeline.

When weekly post screening resumes, all institutions will receive ISIRs in their SAIG mailbox (IGSG25OP for 2024-25 and IGSG26OP for 2025-26) indicating the most recent change(s) in a student’s eligibility represented by the appropriate post-screening reason code(s). For example, if a Pell-eligible student came close to the Pell lifetime eligibility used (LEU) limit (Reason Code 22), then was post screened and determined to no longer be close to the LEU limit (Reason Code 23), and the student experienced no other eligibility changes related to Pell LEU, the delivered ISIR will report Reason Code 23. ISIRs may contain up to three post-screening reason codes and can be found in positions 3877 to 3882 on the ISIR.

During the first two weeks of post screening, institutions may temporarily receive a high volume of ISIRs with NSLDS post-screening codes for 2024-25 and 2025-26. Additionally, please note that institutions may receive ISIRs with post-screening reason codes already available the manual files uploaded to the TG mailbox in the Student AID Information Gateway (SAIG) in February, March, and April of this year (see APP-25-06). Finally, institutions may refer to APP-25-02 for guidance on their responsibilities around resolving disbursements based on this post-screening data.
