REMINDER – G5 to G6 Website Transition and Login.gov Option Coming Aug. 7, 2023 (Updated Oct. 30, 2023)

Note

On Oct. 30, 2023, we updated this announcement to inform users that the system implementation originally planned for Aug. 7, 2023 has now been completed. Schools can now use the new G6 home page.

On Aug. 4, 2023, we updated this announcement to inform users that the system implementation planned for Aug. 7, 2023 has been postponed until further notice. We will update this announcement again once a new date is determined.

As noted on the G5 website, the U.S. Department of Education (the Department) is currently working to build G6, a new and modernized grants and financial management system. On Aug. 7, 2023, the Department will implement the first three key system upgrades for G6: a new URL for the website, a new home page, and a new option to log in to the website. Note: Users will not see changes to major system functionality until late in calendar year 2023; this initial set of upgrades is limited to the new G6 home page and URL.

Federal Student Aid takes this opportunity to remind institutions about these upcoming changes so that users can take the necessary steps to prepare for the resulting operational impacts.

G5 to G6 Website URL Transition and New Home Page

On Aug. 7, 2023, a new website URL will be implemented for G6, and users will begin to use g6.ed.gov to get to the website. The former G5 website URL (g5.gov) will be “retired.” The Department will have a redirect in place to easily get users to G6, so we expect little disruption to institutions. If users have the current website bookmarked or have references to it in printed material, they will need to update those bookmarks or references to the new website URL after it becomes available on Aug. 7, 2023.

In addition to a new URL, the home page will be redesigned and have a new look and feel.

New Login.gov Account Option Available

Along with the website change, users will have a new option to log in to G6 through Login.gov, a secure sign in service operated by the U.S. General Services Administration. Currently, using Login.gov will not be required, but we encourage users to consider creating a Login.gov account and using those credentials as the preferred method to log in to G6 following the August 2023 implementation.

Users can also continue to use their current G5 User ID and password to log in to G6.

Note: With the additional Login.gov option, the log in process will change slightly. On the new G6 home page, users will select the “Sign In” button. From there, users will go to another landing page where they will choose to “Log in with Login.gov” or “Sign In” which will take users to the existing G5 login screen to enter their current G5 credentials.
