Subject: Updated Information Related to the 2017-2018 Supplemental Campus-Based Funds Due to 2017 Hurricanes

In an August 1, 2017 Electronic Announcement, we informed schools about the distribution of 2017-2018 supplemental Campus-Based funds. In this announcement, we provide updated information related to the distribution of supplemental Campus-Based funds, specifically Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and Federal Work-Study (FWS) funds, as a result of the 2017 hurricanes that have recently impacted schools. We continue to work with Congress on additional flexibilities for hurricane-impacted students and schools.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

For the distribution of FSEOG funds, the information in this announcement supersedes the August 1, 2017 announcement. On September 29, 2017, the Department of Education (the Department) reallocated supplemental FSEOG funds to schools that have been directly affected by the 2017 hurricanes. We strongly encourage schools to award FSEOG funds to needy students who are directly affected by the 2017 hurricanes.

Federal Work-Study

Due to recent legislation, the Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria Education Relief Act of 2017, we are reviewing the reallocation process for FWS funds. We expect to provide information about supplemental FWS funds in a subsequent announcement in the near future.

School Notification

Schools will be notified by email through the eCampus-Based (eCB) System when supplemental funding allocations have been awarded. This email is sent to the Financial Aid Administrator identified on the most recently submitted FISAP, or as updated on the "Contact Info" page on the eCB website.

In the email, schools will be referred to the school's Statement of Account on the eCB website which will reflect the supplemental award amount for each program.

To access the Statement of Account, schools should follow these steps:

  • Log in to the eCB website;
  • Select the "Self-Service" link from the top navigation bar;
  • Scroll to the "Campus-Based Notifications for All Available Award Years" section;
  • Scroll to the "Statement of Account" bullet; and,
  • Click on the "2017-2018" link next to it.

Additional Information

Schools should refer to the Dear Colleague Letter, GEN-17-08: Guidance for helping Title IV participants affected by a major disaster, published August 29, 2017, for additional information on the administration of the Title IV student assistance programs if your institution was impacted by the hurricanes.
