Subject: New Financial Literacy Guidance Available for Counselors and College Access Professionals
April serves as National Financial Capability Month and to ensure that counselors and mentors have access to the latest resources to help improve postsecondary student's financial management skills, Federal Student Aid (FSA) is pleased to announce the availability of FSA’s Financial Literacy Guidance. It is critical that financial literacy be a part of every student’s education, whether they are about to enter the workforce or make the decision about where to go to college and how to pay for it. The guidance provides a framework that institutional professionals can use to inform financial aid recipients and students about key financial concepts to help them make informed budgeting, borrowing, and loan repayment decisions.
Promoting a culture of greater financial capability at colleges cannot be viewed as the sole responsibility of financial aid administrators or the student advising office. It has to be a campus-wide mission that gets faculty and staff from across the campus involved, and of course support from campus leadership is essential.
This Guidance and many other key financial literacy resources for financial aid professionals, counselors and mentors can be found on the Financial Aid Toolkit’s search page at FinancialAidToolkit.ed.gov/resources. Select “financial literacy” from the “Learn About Topics” drop-down menu.
