Subject: Submission of Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Reports and Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) Data

On Wednesday, October 16, the Department published an Electronic Announcement discussing the effect of the temporary shutdown of the Federal government due to a lapse of appropriations on deadlines for institutional reports on crime and fire safety under the Clery Act. In the October 16 electronic announcement, we indicated that we would provide further guidance to institutions regarding those deadlines after the government reopened.

In this Electronic Announcement we are providing additional guidance on those deadlines and on the deadlines for institutional reporting under the EADA.

  • With regard to reporting of Clery Act crime statistics and, if applicable, fire statistics, to the Department, we are extending the deadline for reporting to Thursday, October 24, 2013. The reports must be submitted through surveys.ope.ed.gov/security. Institutions that submitted reports to the Department in a hard copy or other form outside of the established electronic process must resubmit their reports through that same website.

  • As noted in the October 16 Electronic announcement, under the regulations institutions were required to provide their Annual Security Reports and, if applicable, Annual Fire Safety Reports, to students and employees by October 1 of this year. This deadline was not affected by the shutdown.

  • The collection period for the EADA data ends on Wednesday, October 30. This deadline remains in effect and affected institutions must submit their data by that deadline.

  • Under the EADA, institutions must, by October 15, make available a report on athletic program participation rates and financial support data to enrolled students, prospective students, and the public. See 34 CFR 668.41(f). This deadline was not affected by the shutdown, and institutions are expected to have complied with this requirement by the October 15 deadline.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.
