Subject: Issue Alert: FAA Access to CPS Online Users Receiving Error When Correcting Financial Information if Applicant Modified Transferred IRS Data

We would like to alert the community to a recent issue we discovered with the FAA Access to CPS Online Web site that is preventing users from correcting student financial information under certain circumstances. This issue only impacts FAA Access users if the applicant modified financial data transferred from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in FAFSA on the Web.

Issue Description

We received and confirmed multiple reports from users that the FAA Access to CPS Online Web site is generating a system error when users attempt to submit a correction to financial information on certain student records.

Based on our research, we have determined the system error is triggered only if ALL of the following circumstances occur:

  • The applicant or parent used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) in FAFSA on the Web to transfer tax return information into the FAFSA;

  • The applicant or parent subsequently corrected (on the current or a subsequent transaction) the financial information he or she transferred from the IRS; and

  • The school uses the FAA Access to CPS Online Web site to correct the financial information back to the original data that was transferred from the IRS.

If the applicant does not modify the data transferred using the IRS DRT, the FAA Access error does not occur.

Workaround

We will implement a resolution to this issue in the next release of the FAA Access to CPS Online Web site, which will be available as of December 29, 2013.

In the interim, if you encounter this FAA Access issue, we request that you ask the applicant to submit the correction(s) to the financial information in question using FAFSA on the Web.
