Subject: Appointment of Federal Student Aid's Chief Operating Officer
On September 15, 2011, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the appointment of James W. Runcie as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Department’s Federal Student Aid office (FSA).
“Jim has shown superb leadership and dedication to ED’s mission and goals with a collaborative style that has enabled much success,” Under Secretary Martha Kantor said. “We look forward to his leadership in the months and years ahead.”
Runcie joined Federal Student Aid in 2009 as an advisor and was named Deputy Chief Operating Officer in 2010. He has served as the Acting Chief Operating Officer since June.Runcie has over 20 years of management experience in private industry. Before joining the Department, Runcie served as Co-Head of Equity Corporate Finance of UBS Investment Bank from 2002 until 2009. Prior to this, Runcie served in executive positions with Banc of America Securities Corporation; Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corporation; and the Xerox Corporation.
Runcie received his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross and earned his Master in Business Administration degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business.
