Subject: COD System Update Needed to Accept New National SMART Grant Eligible Majors for 2010-2011 Award Year
In Dear Colleague Letter GEN-10-12 posted on the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) Web site, the Department of Education (the Department) announced the eligible majors for the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) Program for the 2010-2011 Award Year. The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) 2000 has been updated to the CIP 2010 edition corresponding with the 2010-2011 Award Year. CIP 2010 includes many new CIP codes within the National SMART Grant-eligible fields.
In the very near future, we will update the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System to accept the new CIP codes of academic majors eligible for the National SMART Grant Program for the 2010-2011 Award Year. Schools should not submit National SMART Grant records with these CIP codes to the COD System via batch or the COD Web site until we communicate the readiness of the COD System. We will communicate when those codes may be submitted in a forthcoming Electronic Announcement.
As noted in GEN-10-12, because some CIP 2000 codes have been deleted, re-designated, or moved in the CIP 2010, a school should review the list of eligible majors for the 2010-2011 Award Year and make the corresponding updates to its list of National SMART Grant-eligible majors.
Note: We will update the 2010-2011 COD Technical Reference to include the new CIP codes as soon as possible.
