Subject: Loan Servicing Information-Customer Service and NSLDS Information for Direct Loan and FFEL Purchased Loan Servicers as of September 2009
In an August 28, 2009 Electronic Announcement posted on the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) Web site, we explained our transition to additional servicer support for Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans that the Department of Education (the Department) purchases from FFEL loan holders. As explained in that announcement, four new servicers are now part of the team that assists us with loan servicing.
In this second of a series of announcements, we provide customer service contact information and National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) identifier information for all of our servicers. We present the information in this announcement as follows:
- Customer Service Contact Information for New Servicers
- NSLDS Identification Information
- Additional Announcement and Contact Information
Customer Service Contact Information for New Servicers
Recently, the new servicers began servicing FFEL Purchased Loans. At this time, Direct Loans and FFEL Purchased Loans are serviced as illustrated in the table below. Later, these servicers may be assigned any Title IV financial assistance debt for servicing.
Loan Category | Servicer |
Direct Loans | Direct Loan Servicing Center |
FFEL Purchased Loans | Department of Education Student Loan Servicing Center (ACS) |
FFEL Purchased Loans | FedLoan Servicing (PHEAA) |
FFEL Purchased Loans | Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc. |
FFEL Purchased Loans | Nelnet |
FFEL Purchased Loans | Sallie Mae |
We recognize that borrower and school customers are interested in contact information for the new servicers. To that end, we provide customer service information for all our servicers in an attachment to this announcement entitled “Customer Service Contact Information for Servicers.” In addition, we will add this information to the Contact Information pages on our Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) Web site.
Important Note About Web Site URLs: In some cases, the Web site used by the servicer will use a domain name other than the “.gov” domain name. Instead, borrowers and schools will see a ".com" or “.org” domain in the URL. In the recent past, we have heard from borrowers concerned about the legitimacy of e-mails from these other domain names. We appreciate schools’ assistance in conveying the message to borrowers that the new servicers may not have a “.gov” domain name. The attachment to this announcement reflects the list of correct Web site and e-mail information.
NSLDS Identification Information
Upon purchase of a FFEL Program Loan, a borrower will receive correspondence that identifies the servicer that will service the loan on our behalf. The servicer can be identified in the NSLDS as well. Both a borrower and his or her school can view the servicer code and name associated with each loan. The servicer code and name will be available in the NSLDS approximately seven to ten business days after the loan is assigned to a servicer.
The individual lookup can be done via the appropriate NSLDS Web site (NSLDS Student Access Web site for students or NSLDS Professional Access Web site for schools). To further assist schools, we are developing a new NSLDS report that will list and provide pertinent information for all loans that have been assigned to our servicers.
The servicers will be identified in the NSLDS as follows:
Servicer Name | NSLDS Servicer Name | NLSDS Servicer Code |
Direct Loan Servicing Center | DIRECT LOAN SERVICING CENTER | 00100 |
Department of Education Student Loan Servicing Center (ACS) | DEPT OF ED/ACS | 700577 |
FedLoan Servicing (PHEAA) | DEPT OF ED/FEDLOAN SERVICING (PHEAA) | 700579 |
Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc. | DEPT OF ED/GREAT LAKES | 700581 |
Nelnet | DEPT OF ED/NELNET | 700580 |
Sallie Mae | DEPT OF ED/SALLIE MAE | 700578 |
We include the servicer name and code information along with the contact information in the attachment to this announcement.
