Subject: Correction to National SMART Grant Eligible Majors as Posted in GEN-09-09
We have discovered that there was an error in the National SMART Grant -- Fields of Study attachment to Dear Colleague Letter GEN-09-09 that was posted to IFAP on July 7. The CIP code for American Sign Language was incorrect. It is not 16.15xx but 16.16xx. The attachment has been corrected on IFAP.
As a reminder, as a result of changes in the law, all foreign languages with CIP codes of 16.xx are, beginning with the 2009-2010 award year, eligible National SMART Grant majors, except for the two listed on page 6 of the attachment.
Finally, we will update the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System to accept the CIP codes for the additional foreign language majors and the new Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies major at the three identified schools. Schools should not submit National SMART Grant records with these CIP codes to the COD System via batch or the COD Web site until we communicate the readiness of the COD System. We will communicate when those codes may be submitted in a forthcoming Electronic Announcement.
