Summary: 2008-2009 ISIR Reprocessing on October 17, 2008 for Records Improperly Assigned Social Security Number (SSN) Match Flag of "1"

Posted on 10-17-2008

On Friday, October 17, 2008, Federal Student Aid will reprocess 2008-2009 Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) for applicants impacted by a Social Security Administration (SSA) system issue on October 6, 2008.

The SSA system issue caused over 1,200 records to be incorrectly assigned an SSN Match Flag (ISIR fields #284, 286, and 291) of "1" (No match on SSN) during the matching process. The affected records included both students and parents.

Some of the affected records have already been corrected by applicants, were subsequently resent to match with SSA, and now have the correct SSN Match Flag. Those records will not be reprocessed. The records that will be reprocessed have not been corrected (or were corrected in a manner that did not cause a rematch with SSA) and therefore still contain the incorrect match flag value. When we reprocess these records, we will resend them to the SSA for matching, to ensure the resulting Student Aid Report (SAR)/ISIR transactions have the correct match flag value.

Several methods exist for identifying the records resulting from the October 17, 2008 reprocessing:

  • SARs and ISIRs will include SAR comment code 172, which states "This SAR was produced because we have processed a change to your information based on information reported to us by another agency or as a result of a processing system change. Please review your SAR to see what effect, if any, this change has had on your application."

  • ISIRs produced as a result of this reprocessing will include a value of "05" for the Reprocessed Reason Code (ISIR field #174). The Reprocessed Reason Code value of "05" will also be displayed on page 2 of the paper SAR, in the FAA Info section.
