Summary: Updated Versions of EDExpress 2007-2008 Release 3.1, DL Tools Release 7.0, and SSCR Release 3.0 to Enable Installation in Microsoft Vista Environment

Posted on 09-26-2008

To enable installation on PCs running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, we have posted updated versions of EDExpress for Windows 2007-2008 Release 3.1, Direct Loan (DL) Tools for Windows Release 7.0, and Student Status Confirmation Report (SSCR) for Windows Release 3.0 to the Federal Student Aid Download (FSAdownload) Web site, located at https://fsadownload.ed.gov.

We tested Vista as an operating system for our EDESuite PC products earlier this year, as described in the September 18, 2008 electronic announcement posted to the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) Web site, located at http://ifap.ed.gov. We determined that during the installation of EDESuite PC products on Vista, certain system files could not be registered. Running the programs after installation resulted in error messages about unregistered files. The EDESuite products described in this message have been modified so the software will not check the registration of the system files that were causing the error messages.

The SSCR Release 3.0 reposting also resolves a report printing issue we discovered during our Vista testing, described in the September 18, 2008 electronic announcement as issue #7.

Other than resolving the file registration and SSCR print issues, these versions of EDExpress 2007-2008 Release 3.1, DL Tools Release 7.0, and SSCR Release 3.0 are unchanged from the previous versions available on the FSAdownload Web site.

Note: This FSAdownload reposting is solely for users who wish to install these products for the first time on workstations running Vista. You do not need to reinstall the reposted EDExpress, DL Tools, or SSCR software releases described in this message if they are already loaded on your PC workstation(s) or you no longer use them.

Federal Student Aid has already implemented changes to EDExpress 2008-2009 Release 3.0 and DL Tools Release 8.0 to resolve this issue (both programs can currently be installed and run on Vista). We will also apply the installation process change to all future EDESuite PC product releases, including EDExpress 2009-2010.

Please note that EDESuite products not mentioned in this message or the September 18, 2008 electronic announcement have not been modified for use in Vista.

Important Installation Note

In Microsoft Vista, programs installed under the Program Files folder (the default for EDESuite software) are installed "virtually," which can lead to database management issues. Creating a folder on the local drive outside Program Files and installing EDESuite software to it is strongly recommended.
