Publication Date: October 20, 2006 Author: G. Kay Jacks, General Manager, Application, Operations and Delivery Services, Federal Student Aid Summary: Reminder --- Submit 2006-2007 Student Aid Report (SAR) and Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) Corrections by January 12, 2007 in Preparation for 2007-2008 Renewal FAFSA Reminder Distribution Posted on 10-20-2006 Federal Student Aid is reminding all schools to update 2006-2007 SAR/ISIR transactions for their students with current e-mail and mailing addresses by January 12, 2007, in preparation for the 2007-2008 Renewal Reminder distribution. As noted in the recently published 2007-2008 Renewal FAFSA Process Guide, each aid applicant who meets the eligibility requirements for a 2007-2008 Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 12, 2007, will be sent a Renewal Reminder e-mail or a Renewal Reminder letter between January 17 and February 16, 2007. The Renewal Reminder is an important alert for renewal-eligible students, reminding them that they can use Renewal FAFSA on the Web to reapply for aid. Federal Student Aid encourages schools to work with students to ensure the most current e-mail and mailing address information is present on 2006-2007 transactions, and to submit any other pending corrections that may be preventing the student from being renewal-eligible for 2007-2008, such as resolving rejected transactions. Note: The second Renewal Reminder distribution, introduced in 2006-2007, has been eliminated for 2007-2008. We made this change after receiving feedback from schools indicating that sending the reminders closer to system start-up would be more effective for their students, rather than sending an initial reminder in November and a second reminder in February (as we did in 2006-2007). As a result of this change, the Renewal FAFSA selection period has been extended for 2007-2008 by 11 weeks to enable as many eligible students as possible to receive Renewal Reminders and still meet important state deadlines in late February and early March. Renewal-eligible students must have a "good" match with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to qualify for a Renewal Reminder. A "good" SSN match occurs when the student's SSN, name, and date of birth (DOB) all matched SSA's records, and the student received an SSN Match Flag of "4" A successful SSN match result indicates that the student has previously been sent a Federal Student Aid PIN, which is required to access the student's Renewal FAFSA on the Web. Therefore, we use the SSN match results to determine if the student will be able to access Renewal FAFSA on the Web and should be sent a Renewal Reminder. Renewal-eligible students who provide valid e-mail addresses on their 2006-2007 records will be sent 2007-2008 Renewal Reminder e-mails. Renewal-eligible students whose 2006-2007 records do not have e-mail addresses with valid syntax, or whose Renewal Reminder e-mails have been returned as undeliverable, will be mailed 2007-2008 Renewal Reminder letters, provided there is a deliverable mailing address.
