Summary: Issue Alert: EDExpress for Windows 2006-2007, Release 3.0 Reposted to FSAdownload Web Site to Resolve Import/Export Directory Issue

Posted on 09-08-2006

Federal Student Aid is alerting all schools to a software issue in the version of EDExpress for Windows 2006-2007, Release 3.0 posted to the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid Download (FSAdownload) Web site (located at http://fsadownload.ed.gov/) on August 30, 2006.

This software issue only impacts schools that modified the default Import and Export data directory locations established in an earlier EDExpress 2006-2007 version (Release 1.0 or Release 2.0) to a path other than C:\IAM\DATA and then upgraded to Release 3.0 between August 30 and September 5, 2006.

Issue

The EDExpress 2006-2007 software enables you to customize the default Import and Export directories where data files you export and import through the Student Aid Internet Gateway (SAIG) are stored. The File Management feature (Tools, Setup, Global, File Management) defaults to the C:\IAM\DATA directory for all Import and Export files, but many users modify the directory path for particular data files to different locations, such as a folder on a local area network (LAN).

We have discovered that following an upgrade installation from a previous version of EDExpress 2006-2007 (Release 1.0 or Release 2.0) to the version of Release 3.0 posted on the FSAdownload Web site between August 30 and September 5, 2006, the database update process overwrites any customized Import and Export paths you have defined in File Management with the default path of C:\IAM\DATA.

Potential Actions Required Based on Release 3.0 Installation Status

On September 5, 2006, Federal Student Aid replaced the Release 3.0 software available on the FSAdownload Web site with a version that resolves this software issue. If you have not downloaded or installed Release 3.0, this issue does not affect you and you can proceed normally with the process as outlined in the electronic announcement posted on August 31, 2006 on the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) Web site, located at ifap.ed.gov.

If you installed the version of Release 3.0 posted between August 30 and September 5, 2006, you will fall into one of the two categories below-please follow the instructions cited:

1) If you normally use the C:\IAM\DATA folder as your default directory for Import and Export files, this issue does not affect you and you do not need to reinstall Release 3.0 or make any changes to your EDExpress File Management setup-you can proceed with using the version of Release 3.0 installed on your system.

2) If you normally customize the default data directories for Import and Export files, open the EDExpress 2006-2007 software, access the File Management feature (Tools, Setup, Global, File Management), and correct any Import or Export paths to the appropriate directories on your PC or your LAN. Regardless of whether you are running EDExpress in a standalone PC or LAN environment, you only need to make these changes once, as Import and Export directory information is stored in the EDExpress database rather than on individual workstations.

Note: If you have already imported or exported files to the C:\IAM\DATA directory and need assistance relocating those files to the proper location(s) on your system, contact CPS/SAIG Technical Support at the phone number or e-mail address provided below.

We regret any inconvenience this software issue may have caused you. If you have any questions regarding downloading, installing, or using EDExpress 2006-2007, Release 3.0, contact CPS/SAIG Technical Support at 800/330-5947 (TDD/TTY 800/511-5806) or by e-mail at CPSSAIG@ed.gov.
