Publication Date: August 11, 2006 Author: Jeff Baker, Director Policy Liaison and Implementation, Federal Student Aid Summary: Reminder of Comment Period for Recently Published Interim Final Regulations Posted on 08-11-2006 We recently published in the Federal Register two sets of interim final regulations amending the Title IV student assistance regulations to implement changes made to the Higher Education Act (HEA) by the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (HERA) and other recently enacted legislation. Each set of regulations included a solicitation for comments from the public that may result in the publication of revised regulations.The first set of interim final regulations was published on July 3, 2006 (71 FR 37990) and is related to the two new Title IV grant programs created by the HERA, the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) Program and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant Program. The deadline for submitting comments on these interim final regulations is August 17, 2006. The second set of interim final regulations was published on August 9, 2006 (71 FR 45666) and reflects other provisions of the new legislation that affect students, borrowers and other program participants in the Title IV student aid programs. The deadline for submitting comments on these interim final regulations is September 8, 2006. The interim final regulations published in the Federal Register have been posted to our Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) website or may be accessed directly by clicking on the appropriate 'url' at the end of this announcement. Comments should be submitted in accordance with the instructions included on the first page of each set of interim final regulations.
