Summary: Reminder: Update Your Federal School Code Information by July 21, 2006

Posted on 07-03-2006

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) would like to remind you that it is time to update your Federal School Code (FSC) name, address, and contact information on the Schools Portal: E-App for Schools (E-App) Web site (http://eligcert.ed.gov). To ensure we receive your changes in time to incorporate them into the 2007-2008 Federal School Code List, please have your information verified and/or corrected by July 21, 2006.

Updates will be added to the FSC File on FAFSA on the Web that is used by students to select schools they want to receive their application data. The FSC File is also used to create the Federal School Code List. Applicants for federal student aid use this list to find the codes of the school(s) they want to include on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When a FAFSA is processed, the student aid information is made available to the school(s) the applicant listed on the FAFSA. Applicants may get the FSC List from high schools, libraries, and postsecondary schools, or they can access the FSC search online at the FAFSA on the Web site at http://fafsa.ed.gov.

If your school's name, city, state, and contact information, as shown in the FSC file, have not changed, you DO NOT have to do anything.

To update your FSC address:

1. Go to the Electronic Application for Approval to Participate in the Federal Student Financial Aid Programs (E-App) Web site (http://eligcert.ed.gov).

2. Click on the "Update your Federal School Code Addresses which are used by the FAFSA" link on the left side of the page under the "Other Features" section.

NOTE: If you are a school or are representing a school, you should already have the logon ID and password to get into the E-App Web site. If you are representing a school and you do not have the logon ID and password for the E-App Web site, you should be able to get the information from the school that you represent.

If you cannot get that information from the school, contact the Case Team for your state. Please see the E-App home page (http://eligcert.ed.gov) for the phone number of your Case Team.

3. Once you have logged into the E-App Web site, the next page will display your school's main location and, if applicable, any additional locations, along with the OPE ID, FSC, FSC address, and contact information for the school(s). Only approved locations with an FSC address are listed.

4. Click on the "Update FSC Address" link to change the school's FSC name, address, and/or the contact person's name, telephone number, and e-mail address.

NOTE: A school can only have ONE city and state per FSC. In addition, changes to the FSC file do not update your school's name or address in any other ED database. If you are changing the "Official Name or Address" of your school you must do so by submitting an "Update" application through the E-App.

Attachment 1, at the end of this message, shows the valid length for address fields and some standard abbreviations if you need to use them.

Please verify that the type of FSC for your school is correct. The following are the current code types:

0 (zero) = Your school participates in the Federal Pell Grant program, as well as the Direct Loan, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program, or Campus-Based programs.
B = Your school participates in Campus-Based programs only.
E = Your school has an ED-assigned code for an approved additional location.
G = Your school participates in the FFEL or Direct Loan program, as well as the Campus-Based programs.

As a reminder, to ensure we receive your changes in time to incorporate them into the 2007-2008 Federal School Code List, please have your information verified and/or corrected by July 21, 2006.

For help with the E-App Web site, your user ID or password, or in filling out the EAPP, contact the Case Team for your state. Please see the E-App home page (http://eligcert.ed.gov) for the phone number of your Case Team. We appreciate your assistance in keeping the Federal School Code List up-to-date.
