Summary: National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) Aggregate Calculations issue affecting 2006-2007 Prescreening

Posted on 05-03-2006

The U.S. Department of Education would like to alert the financial aid community of an NSLDS aggregate calculations issue that affected the consolidation loan breakdown information for some 2006-2007 applications.

NSLDS experienced a system error that affected how the underlying loan(s) of a consolidation loan (CL/D5) were considered. Additional unsubsidized loan(s) identified by NSLDS as being from a PLUS Loan denial (Additional Unsub flag 'P') were considered as unallocated consolidation loans during the underlying loan breakdown, rather than as unsubsidized loans. This issue only affected additional unsubsidized loans when a consolidation loan was involved.

This issue was corrected on April 17, 2006 and additional unsubsidized loans due to a PLUS Loan denial are now being calculated correctly as part of the unsubsidized loan balance, during a consolidation loan breakdown.

To ensure all schools have the most current student data, approximately 21,000 records have been sent to CPS for postscreening with a postscreening reason code of 99 to indicate NSLDS reprocessing. Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) created as a result of this postscreening will have a process date of May 5, 2006.

For information regarding the consolidation loan breakdown process, please refer to NSLDS Newsletters 8 and 11 under the NSLDS Reference Materials link on the IFAP Web site at www.ifap.ed.gov.
