Summary: Information from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)/ National Service Trust

Posted on 05-09-2005

This is the first of a series of periodic announcements that will provide information from the National Service Trust, which is the department within the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) that administers educational awards to AmeriCorps members after they perform community service. These awards include the payment of interest accrued on student loans during members' terms of service and the payment of educational expenses or outstanding student loan balances. Although the Trust has paid awards through U.S. Treasury-issued paper checks in the past, it is now required to convert all payees to EFT.

These will keep you updated on this effort, and will also provide other information as appropriate.

Background

The National Service Trust Fund grants educational awards to individuals who successfully complete a designated term of service in the Corporation for National and Community Service's AmeriCorps programs. These awards can be used: 1.) To repay qualified existing or future student loans; 2.) To pay all or part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education (including certain vocational programs); and 3.) To pay expenses incurred while participating in an approved school-to-work program. The Office of the National Service Trust (the Trust) is the office within the Corporation that administers the National Service Trust Fund (the Fund).

FSA and the Trust have partnered to provide you, via IFAP, news and information related to the Trust Fund and to use this global medium to improve the Trust's services to you. The Trust has established an email address to be used by financial and education institutions for questions or concerns related to the Trust. You can access this address by going to trustcomm@cns.gov.
