RE: Reminder for Students: Update Contact Information in Preparation for 2005-2006 Renewal Application Process
DATE: September 10, 2004
The 2005-2006 Renewal Application process will begin in October 2004. In preparation for this year's process, we ask that schools remind students to update their e-mail addresses, physical mailing addresses, and other contact information in the Central Processing System (CPS) so that Renewal application information can be delivered in a timely manner.
Students can update their e-mail addresses, physical mailing addresses, and other contact information by visiting the FAFSA on the Web site at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Contact information can be viewed via the Student Access section of the site and updated via the Corrections section of the site. Students can also update contact information on their Student Aid Report (SAR) and mail to the FAFSA processor at the address provided on the SAR.
Since most continuing students are using the Web to reapply for aid, beginning in 2005-2006 we will automatically send Renewal Reminders to renewal-eligible students instead of sending them paper Renewal FAFSAs. There are two types of Renewal Reminders: PIN Mailer Renewal Reminders and E-mail Renewal Reminders. Renewal Reminders inform students they may use the Web to reapply for aid.
E-mail Renewal Reminders are sent to applicants who have previously received a PIN, received a "good" Social Security Number (SSN), name, and date of birth (DOB) match (SSN Match Flag = 4) from the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2004-2005, and provided an e-mail address with correct syntax on their 2004-2005 FAFSA.
PIN Mailer Renewal Reminders are sent to students who received a "good" SSN, name, and DOB match (SSN Match Flag = 4) from the SSA in 2004-2005, but did not provide an e-mail address on their 2004-2005 FAFSA. A PIN Mailer Renewal Reminder is a paper document that is mailed to the student's permanent mailing address. It contains the student's PIN, which the student can use to access his or her Renewal Application through Renewal FAFSA on the Web.
If you want students to receive paper Renewal FAFSAs instead of Reminders, you can make paper Renewal FAFSA requests for students who meet certain requirements through FAA Access to CPS Online, or by making a Type 2 Request through the SAIG. Complete details are provided in the Process Guide for Renewal Application Data (RAD) 2005-2006, which is available on the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid Download (FSAdownload) Web site, located at http://fsadownload.ed.gov.
Students with questions about the use of FAFSA on the Web should call 800/4-FED-AID for assistance.
