RE: Update Federal School Code File
DATE: July 12, 2004

The U.S. Department of Education would like to remind you that it is time to update your Federal School Code (FSC) name, address, and contact information on the Schools Portal, E-App for Schools Web site (eligcert.ed.gov).

These updates will be added to the FSC File used by students filing FAFSA on the Web applications to select schools they want to receive their application data. The FSC File is also used to create the Federal School Code List we publish every year. Applicants for federal student aid use this list to find the codes of the school(s) they want to include on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When a FAFSA is processed, the student aid information is made available to the school(s) the applicant listed on the FAFSA. Applicants may get the FSC List from high schools, libraries, and postsecondary schools, or they can access the FSC search online at the FAFSA on the Web site at fafsa.ed.gov.

If your school's name, city, state, and contact information, as shown in the FSC file, have not changed, you DO NOT have to do anything.

To update your FSC address:

1. Go to eligcert.ed.gov.

2. Click on the "Update your Federal School Code Addresses which are used by the FAFSA" link on the left side of the page under Other Features.

If you are a school or you are representing a school, you should already have the logon ID and password to get into the EAPP. If you are representing a school, and you do not have the logon ID and password for EAPP, you should be able to get the information from the school that you represent. If you cannot get that information, send an e-mail to COD School Relations (codsupport@acs-inc.com) requesting that updates be made to the FSC address, contact person name and/or e-mail address or that you want to add an FSC for an additional location.

Please include as the "Subject" of the e-mail that you want to update or add an FSC and include your school's full 8 digit OPE number and (if you know it) the COD/RID.

In addition, a phone number and contact person must be included in the body of the e-mail. Use this address to contact COD School Relations (codsupport@acs-inc.com).

Once you have logged in, the next page will display your school's main location and, if applicable, any additional locations, along with the OPE ID, FSC, FSC address, and contact information for the school(s). Only approved locations with an FSC address are listed.

NOTE: A school can only have ONE city and state per Federal School Code. In addition, changes to the FSC file does not change your school's name or address in any other U.S. Department of Education database. Attachment 1, at the end of this message, shows the valid length for address fields as well as some standard abbreviations if you need to use them.

3. Click on the "Update FSC Address" link to change the school's FSC name, address, and/or the contact person's name, telephone number, and e-mail address.

Also, please verify that the type of Federal School Code you use is correct. The following are the current code types:

0 (zero) = You participate in the Pell Grant program, as well as the Direct Loan, FFEL or Campus-based programs.
B = You participate in Campus-based programs only.
E = You have an ED-assigned code for an approved additional location.
G = You participate in the FFEL or Direct Loan program, as well as the Campus-based programs.

To ensure we receive your changes in time to incorporate them into the 2005-2006 Federal School Code List, please have your information verified and / or corrected by July 26, 2004.

Your assistance in keeping the Federal School Code List up-to-date is appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact CPS/SAIG Technical Support at 800/330-5947 or via e-mail at CPSSAIG@pearson.com.
