RE: Reminder for Students: Update Contact Information in Preparation for 2004-2005 Renewal
Application Process

The 2004-2005 Renewal Application process will begin in October 2003. In preparation for this year’s process, we ask that schools remind their students now to update their e-mail addresses, physical mailing addresses, and other contact information so that PIN Mailers, PIN Reminders, or paper Renewal FAFSAs can be delivered in a timely manner to the proper locations.

A PIN Mailer is a paper document that is mailed to the student’s permanent mailing address. It contains the student’s PIN, which the student can use to access his or her Renewal Application through Renewal FAFSA on the Web.

A PIN Reminder is sent via e-mail to applicants who have previously received a PIN and provided an e-mail address with correct syntax to remind them to file using Renewal FAFSA on the Web.

If a student meets ONE of the following criteria, a PIN Mailer will be sent:

-The student’s 2003-2004 transaction that qualifies for a renewal application was entered using FAFSA on the Web or Corrections on the Web.

-The student’s grade level in college equals fifth-year undergraduate, graduate/professional, or beyond.

-Your school or another school requests that the student receive a PIN instead of a paper Renewal Application.

If the student meets one of the above criteria AND supplied an e-mail address with correct syntax on his or her 2003-2004 record, the student will receive a PIN Reminder via e-mail. This situation applies to all students, whether they filed on paper or electronically.

If the student meets one of the above criteria but did not supply an e-mail address on his or her 2003-2004 record, or supplied one with incorrect syntax, the student will receive a PIN Mailer via postal mail. This situation applies to all students, whether they filed on paper or electronically.

If the student does not meet any of the above criteria, he or she will receive a paper Renewal FAFSA.

To ensure all materials are sent to the correct location, returning students should make sure they have provided the most current e-mail and physical mailing address information to the Central Processing System (CPS).

Students can update their contact information by visiting the FAFSA on the Web site at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Contact information can be viewed via the Student Access section of the site and updated via the Corrections section of the site.

Students with questions about the use of FAFSA on the Web should call 800/4-FED-AID for assistance.
