RE: Suggestions for Installing EDExpress for Windows 2003-04, Version 9.0.1 Service Release

CPS/WAN Technical Support would like to offer a few suggestions and tips regarding the installation of the EDExpress for Windows 2003-04, Version 9.0.1 service release, recently posted on the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid Download (FSAdownload) Web site, located at http://fsadownload.ed.gov/index.htm.

EDExpress for Windows 2003-04, Version 9.0.1 is a service release, not a full upgrade release of the software. You must already have EDExpress for Windows 2003-04, Version 9.0 installed on your system in order to run the Version 9.0.1 update.

Please note that the Version 9.0.1 service release does not add the Direct Loan and Pell modules. Those modules will be contained in the next full upgrade release, Version 9.1, which is currently scheduled to be posted to the FSAdownload Web site in mid-April 2003. Version 9.0.1 merely updates Version 9.0 with the final 2003-04 Federal Pell Payment Schedule tables.

If you would rather wait for the full upgrade release, Version 9.1, you do not have to install Version 9.0.1. Version 9.1 will contain the updated Pell tables in addition to the Direct Loan and Pell modules.

If you have successfully installed EDExpress, Version 9.0.1 on your system, do not be concerned about any of the following suggestions and tips.

·After you download the Version 9.0.1 update, please restart your computer before running it. As a general rule, it is a good idea to reboot your computer before installing software of any kind. This helps prevent potential installation problems by clearing Windows' memory and maximizing system resources.

· If EDExpress is set up on a network, make sure that all users are logged out of EDExpress, Version 9.0 when you run the Version 9.0.1 update.

· When you double-click Express901.exe to start the service release installation, the installation files are first unpacked to a temporary folder on your computer. If you receive a message that certain files are already "installed" on your computer, choose "Yes to All" to overwrite them. These are not EDExpress, Version 9.0 program files.

· During installation, the software will determine where EDExpress, Version 9.0 has been installed on your PC. Although you are presented with an option to browse and to install the files to a different location, you should accept the default location unless your technical support staff has advised you otherwise. The EDExpress, 9.0.1 service release should NOT be installed to the network folder containing your database.

· The first time you start EDExpress after installing Version 9.0.1, you should receive a message that a one-time update needs to be made to the database. After the update, if you receive a message that your software and database do not match, check to see how you are starting EDExpress, Version 9.0.1. If you are starting the program from a Desktop icon, try starting the program from Start | Programs | EDESuite | EDExpress for Windows 2003-2004. If you have changed the installation path (not recommended) of the Version 9.0.1 service release, it is possible that your Desktop icon is pointing to the Version 9.0 executable file.
