RE: Error Code 2 on Type 2 PIN Requests for 2003-2004

The U. S. Department of Education would like to alert you to an issue affecting errors on Type 2 Renewal PIN requests for the 2003-2004 academic year. If your institution created and submitted a Type 2 PIN request file that was subsequently returned with error code 2, please take a moment to read the information below.

Type 2 PIN requests identify each student by ID (SSN and name code). Some PIN requests are being returned in an EREP04OP file with an error code of 2. This error code occurs when there is a mismatch between the Federal School Code on the student's ISIR and the Federal School Code of the school making the request.

While some of these error codes are legitimate, error code 2 has been generated in a few cases when the student is apparently eligible to receive a PIN as a result of the type 2 request. The small number of errors is due to a procedural change for 2003-2004. As noted on page five of the Renewal Application Data Process Guide, all Renewal FAFSA eligible records are checked against the NSLDS Payment School File. If a payment is found for the 2002-2003 academic year, the school code of the paying institution will be inserted on the student's renewal application, replacing the existing school code on the ISIR.

In some cases, the NSLDS file will contain a school's "G" code when a Direct Loan disbursement is made. Because the "G" code does not match the Federal School Code, these PIN request records are rejected with an error code of 2. While the school will receive an error, please be assured that these students will receive either a PIN number or a paper renewal by email or direct mail.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
