RE: Issue Alert: 2002-2003 EDExpress Version 8.0 - Packaging: Doubling Manually Awarded Amounts when Calculating Remaining Need for Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan
CPS/WAN Technical Support wishes to alert all users of the 2002-2003 EDExpress Version 8.0 Packaging module of a recently discovered issue that affects the calculation of the Remaining Need value. This issue will be resolved in Version 8.1.
Issue: When Packaging a student record from the Awards tab, if funds with Aid Types other than "O" or "V" have been manually added PRIOR to packaging, the software may treat these manually added funds as double their actual amount when calculating remaining need eligibility for the Federal Stafford Loan (Aid Type "S"). As a result, EDExpress may in some cases award the Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan for a lesser amount even though the student is eligible for a higher amount.
For example, if a student has been manually awarded a grant (Aid Type G) for $6,000, the software will read this as $12,000 but only while calculating the Remaining Need value for a Federal Subsidized Loan. Therefore, if the Budget is $18,000 and the EFC is 4000, the software will calculate a Remaining Need value of $2,000 instead of $8,000.
Workaround: This issue only occurs when packaging from the Awards tab of the student record. We therefore advise that you package your records globally (with the student record closed) from the main menu of EDExpress by choosing Process | Package. For any student records that may have been affected by this issue, we advise that you repackage them globally from the main menu of EDExpress by choosing Process | Repackage. You may wish to select records by clicking Selection Criteria | Select Records or use a query to narrow your selection of student records.Â
We regret any inconvenience this issue may cause you. If you have any questions regarding this message, please contact CPS/WAN Technical Support at 800/330-5947 or via e-mail at CPSWAN@NCS.COM.
