Your students may have experienced some slow response times from FAFSA on the Web or PIN sites in the afternoons between January 13 and 21, 2002.
Slow response times were occurring during heavy volume periods in the afternoon because the Central Processing System (CPS) mainframe was not responding to requests for information from the Web sites as quickly as we would have liked. However, users have been experiencing quick response times since January 21 when we made adjustments which significantly enhanced mainframe performance.
From January 1 through January 24, 2002, we received 223,830 applications over the Web---a 60% increase over the number received on those days last year. Of those 223,830 applications, 209,892 are for 2002-03.
We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you and your students. We continue to monitor performance in preparation for peak 2002-2003 application processing this spring.
