RE: Verification Status Code "W" For 2000-2001

THIS MESSAGE: Announces the annual RFMS notification to institutions that have accepted student origination records with a verification status code "W" in RFMS.

During the week of April 23, RFMS will send through TIV WAN two text files (PGTX message class) giving institutions information on Verification Status Code "W", without documentation, students at their institutions for 2000-2001. One text file contains Verification Status "W" summary information and critical date information. The other text file is in the reconciliation record format and provides a listing of the students at the institution with Verification Code "W" status in RFMS. You will not receive these files unless RFMS shows your institution as having students in a Verification Status "W" status. This file will not make any updates or changes to your institution database or files.

We are providing this special listing to help you identify the records of the students that need to be updated in RFMS. Until RFMS receives and accepts an updated origination record with a corrected verification status code, RFMS will only allow one disbursement of up to one half of the scheduled award amount. At a later date we will reduce these student's accepted disbursement award amount to $0.00 if you have not reported an acceptable Verification Status Code on the Origination record for each student selected for verification.

Students with verification Status Code of "W" appear in the special listing for three reasons:

- You reported the "W" because you elected to make one payment to the student prior to completion of the application data verification process under Section 668.58 Subpart E of the Student Assistance Provisions; or

- The Student was selected for verification by the Central Processing System (CPS), and you reported "Not Selected" (N), a "blank", or an invalid value on the student's Origination record; or

- You reported Verification Status code "Reprocessed" (R) on the Origination record submitted using the student's original application record (Transaction 01).

The verification process must be completed within 90 days from the applicant's last date of enrollment, or by August 31, 2001, whichever occurs first. (All such deadlines and submission dates for the 2000-2001 processing year are set forth in the Federal Register Notice Vol. 65, No. 132 from July 10, 2000, which can be found on the IFAP web site (

http://ifap.ed.gov) under the Current SFA Publications section under Federal Registers.) As soon as you complete verification of the application data, you must submit an acceptable Origination record revising the Verification Status code. After the updated Origination record is accepted you may submit Disbursement record(s) for the remaining balance of the Pell award due the student. If no additional payment is due the student, you do not need to do anything more than update the Origination record.
