RE: Updated Pell Data in NSLDS

We are pleased to announce completion of two (2) major updates for Federal Pell Grant program data in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). The daily update from Pell’s Recipient and Financial Management System (RFMS) to NSLDS resumed October 13, 2000.

On October 11, 2000, NSLDS loaded nearly 499,000 Pell recipient records for school year 2000-2001. This load included all Disbursement records accepted by RFMS through September 12, 2000. With the resumption of the daily update to NSLDS, the data from September 13, 2000 through October 13, 2000 will be posted into NSLDS by early next week. From that point on, NSLDS will receive Pell recipient data within 24 hours of its acceptance in RFMS.

On September 27, 2000, we completed reloading of all 1999-2000 Pell Grant recipient records to correct a number of data issues that occurred from July 1999 through August 28, 2000 when we halted the daily update:

Missing records: RFMS did not send all of its daily update files to NSLDS. As a result, other schools the student attended were sometimes missing from NSLDS, or Disbursement amounts did not always reflect the total paid to the student.

Eligibility Used and Total Eligibility Used: The percentages passed to NSLDS from RFMS were incorrectly calculated whenever more than one school originated a student and the Scheduled Federal Pell Grant amounts differed.

Student identifiers: RFMS was unable to send changes in the Current Social Security Number (SSN), Date of birth, or First name. If a student changed these data in the Central Processing System after the date his or her first Disbursement record was sent to NSLDS from RFMS, the new information was never made available to NSLDS. This means that a look up on the most recent Current SSN provided on the ISIR would produce a “Not found” in NSLDS.

Should you wish to view RFMS data directly, please use the POP function on the Pell Grant website (
http://ifap.ed.gov/IFAPWebApp/currentPGRFMSProcessPag.jsp/). The POP Information displays all Origination records accepted by the Pell Grant program, including those from all other schools that reported the student. For each student and campus attended, the display gives the Scheduled Award, Total Accepted Disbursement Amount, Eligibility Used, as well as the Total Eligibility Used at all campuses attended. The data available in the POP Information view is NOT limited to just those students with reported payments in excess of 100% eligibility used but lists all students with accepted Origination records. In our most recent Web release, we have corrected the Total Eligibility Used to be a percent (not an amount) and replaced “Next Disbursement Date” with the RFMS Process date of the last accepted Disbursement transaction.
