PublicationDate: 3/12/99 Summary: Tip of the Week: Clearing Record Locks Author: CPS - Central Processing System (CPS) Posted on March 12, 1999 TO: All Destination Points FROM: CPS Customer Service RE: Tip of the Week: Clearing Record Locks This week's tip highlights a specific feature or process in the 1999-2000 EDExpress software: Clearing Record Locks Record locking prevents multiple users in a network environment from accessing the same student record at the same time. Occasionally, record locks are not cleared if a record or the system is exited incorrectly (for example, if your system locks up and you have to reboot while EDExpress is running). You may then receive the message "Already logged in" when you restart EDExpress and attempt to log in. Record locking can also occur in a non-network environment if a record or the system is exited incorrectly, in which case you may then receive the message "Record in use by: (Your User ID)." Resolution for the "Already logged in" message: Log into EDExpress using the SYSADMIN User ID and associated password, go to Tools/Setup/Global/Security Users, and unmark the "Logged In" checkbox for the user who is unable to log in. Note: The password for the SYSADMIN User ID is established during the initial logon into 1999-2000 EDExpress and can be manually changed under Security Users setup. You should always keep your SYSADMIN password in a safe and accessible place. Resolution for the "Record in use" message: Go to Tools/Utilities/Clear Locks. The software will generate a grid displaying all current record locks by User ID --- you can either clear all existing record locks for all users, or mark individual User IDs for record lock deletion. Once initiated, the lock clearing process generally runs very quickly. The utility will clear all marked record locks out of your database, and allow the blocked user(s) to re-access the records and/or processes they were previously being blocked from. Unlike previous versions, if you are running EDExpress in a network environment, only those users whose locks are being cleared should be logged off the system. Other users (whose record locks you are NOT clearing) do not have to log out of the software for the process to complete successfully.
