RE: Distribution of 1999-2000 EDExpress Version 5.1

The Department is pleased to announce the release of 1999-2000 EDExpress for Windows, Version 5.1. This version contains the full Direct Loan module for the 1999-2000 cycle.

Distribution of Version 5.1 to all participating EDE institutions will complete on Tuesday, March 16.

Version 5.1 is an upgrade to Version 5.0, the first 32-bit edition of EDExpress to be released by the Department. Please note you must continue to have Windows 95, NT or 98 as your PC operating system to run this version. You must also be in compliance with the system requirements outlined in Action Letter #2 (October, 1997).

To upgrade from Version 5.0 to Version 5.1, select the custom install option during your standalone or workstation installation, and mark the checkbox for Direct Loan and any other modules you use (so module fixes can also be installed). Do NOT mark the "Database" checkbox unless you are performing a first-time installation or wish to overwrite your Version 5.0 database. (Remember, if you choose to overwrite your Version 5.0 database, all data previously entered will be lost.)

After you upgrade from Version 5.0 to Version 5.1, the software will perform a one-time-only update of your EDExpress database. For this reason, we strongly recommend you perform a full-backup of your Version 5.0 database prior to installing Version 5.1. Following installation of Version 5.1, you should access the EDExpress software and allow the software to perform the database update.

If you are running EDExpress in a network environment, you should first complete ALL of your workstation installations on all relevant production PCs, then access the software from ONE designated workstation to allow the update to perform successfully.

For further information regarding the EDExpress installation process, please consult the Installation Guide sent with Version 5.0.
