Dear Colleague:

The U.S. Department of Education cordially invites you to attend the Direct Loan Annual Conference to be held March 28-30, 1999, in Washington, D.C. This conference will include sessions on the impact of reauthorization, technical amendments, the new Master Promissory Note, program policy updates, the new GAPS System, cash management, future innovations, a review of the performance based organization model, and much more.

As you may know, the Department sponsored its first Direct Loan conference this past spring and it was an overwhelming success. The number of attendees surpassed all expectations and the many positive evaluations we received urged us to make this conference an annual event.

We believe this conference will be of great interest to financial aid directors, business officers, and other staff. You can register via the web at http://www.ed.gov/DirectLoan, or you can fax your registration form to Lynn Mikelatis at 703/934-9870. If you have any questions regarding the registration process, please call Lynn at 703/218-1422.

There are no registration fees; however, attendees are responsible for all other expenses including meals, lodging and travel. The conference, to be held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel (formerly the Sheraton Washington Hotel), will begin at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, March 28, and end at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30. To reserve lodging, please contact the hotel at 202/328-2900 and ask for the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) room block. More information on lodging is listed on the enclosed sheet. Additional information concerning the conference will be posted on the on http://www.ed.gov/DirectLoan as it becomes available.

We hope that you will join us for this innovative and informative conference!

Sincerely,
