Correction to Recertification Letter

PublicationDate: 1/16/97
Summary: Correction to Recertification Letter

Dear Colleagues:

Recently 1300 institutions received notice of their selection to begin the recertification of
their participation in the title IV. The Application for Approval to Participate in Federal
Student Financial Aid Programs (Application) and a computer disk was mailed to
Presidents. A copy of the cover letter without the Application and disk was mailed to
the financial aid administrator.

On Page 4 of that letter, schools were asked to direct any questions about the Application
to a DRCC Application Specialist. Unfortunately, there was an error in the phone
number which was given, and that has caused calls to be received at an inactive number.

We apologize for any anxiety or inconvenience this error may have caused. The
correct number is 202-205-1935 (not 205-7935, as stated in the letter). Staff is available
at this number Monday through Friday from 8:30-5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. At
other times or when the line is in use, a Voice Mail message may be left and the call
will be returned.

We are asking that schools use this number to determine whether or not the Application
was received or if there are general questions about the mechanics of completing either
the paper or the diskette version of the Application. A DRCC Specialist may call if there
is a need to follow up for additional information or documentation. When questions are
specific to a school or when guidance is needed to clarify the information which is to be
reported on the Application, we are asking schools to contact the Regional case team
member responsible for the state where the school is located. The complete listing for
those contacts is found on page 5 of my recent letter and an updated copy is also
printed with this letter. (Note: Do not use the list of contacts printed on Page 5 of the
Application: these were superseded by the reorganization of the Service.)

In the near future we will be posting general information to the BBS about the
recertification process including responses to some common questions and tips
on avoiding errors in this important process. Thank you for your cooperation and
understanding as we move ahead with our initiative to recertify all institutions as
required under the Higher Education Act Amendments of 1992.

Sincerely,

Marianne R. Phelps
Director, Institutional
Participation and Oversight Service
