SUBJECT: 1998-99 Processing Status Update # 2

I am pleased to present you with my second message on the processing of the 1998-99
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the week of January 12-18,
we processed 86,588 applications for the 1998-99 cycle. For the same period during
the 1997-98 cycle, we processed 25,231 applications. We believe this initial increase
in volume is due to the earlier distribution of Renewal applications and FAFSAs. Both
the MDE and CPS are maintaining their contractual turnaround times. Statistics are
through Friday, January 16:

FAFSA & Renewal Applications
YEAR TO DATE -- GRAND TOTALS 286,483 86,588
I. Paper 282,556 82,661
II. Electronic 3,927 3,927
