SUBJECT: 1998-99 Processing Status Update # 15

I am pleased to present you with my fifteenth and final message on
the processing of the 1998-99 Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). During the week of April 13-17, we processed
287,818 applications through the Central Processing System (CPS)
for the 1998-99 cycle, bringing our year-to-date total to 4,205,849
applications.

Because our contractors have now comfortably passed beyond the
peak processing period, we are discontinuing these weekly
processing updates.

As always, we encourage students to file their FAFSAs
electronically, including via FAFSA on the Web. Electronic
applications are faster and easier for students to file and for the
Department to process.

The following statistics are through Friday, April 17:

FAFSA and Renewal Applications
