SUBJECT: 1998-99 Processing Status Update # 14

I am pleased to present you with my fourteenth message on the processing of the
1998-99 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the week of April
6-10, we processed 447,777 applications through the Central Processing System (CPS)
for the 1998-99 cycle, bringing our year-to-date total to 3,918,031 applications.

As of Monday, April 13, the Department's Multiple Data Entry (MDE) contractors have
completed processing all FAFSAs which were received more than seven business days
ago. Our contractors have now completed processing the peak workload of FAFSAs
without undue delays or difficulties in calculating students' eligibility for financial aid.

As always, we encourage students to file their FAFSAs electronically, including via
FAFSA on the Web. We are pleased that electronic FAFSAs have increased by half
again since this point last year. Electronic applications are faster and easier for students
to file and for the Department to process.

The following statistics are through Friday, April 10:
