SUBJECT: 1998-99 Processing Status Update # 13

I am pleased to present you with my thirteenth message on the processing of the 1998-99
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the week of March 30-April
3, we processed 556,192 applications through the Central Processing System (CPS) for
the 1998-99 cycle, bringing our year-to-date total to 3,470,254 applications.

Of the 441,543 applications that have been received but not yet completely processed:

* 179,285 have been in process at the Department's Multiple Data Entry (MDE)
contractors for less than seven business days, the normal processing time for our MDE
contractors;
* 209,215 have been completed by the Department's MDE contractors and are now in
process at the CPS; and
* 53,043 have been at our MDE contractors for longer than seven business days.
