SUBJECT: 1998-99 Processing Status Update # 12

I am pleased to present you with my twelfth message on the processing of the 1998-99
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the week of March 23-27, we
processed 542,832 applications through the Central Processing System (CPS) for the
1998-99 cycle, bringing our year-to-date total to 2,914,062 applications.

Of the 688,925 applications that have been received but not yet completely processed:

* 550,761 have been in process at the Department's Multiple Data Entry (MDE)
contractors for less than seven business days, the normal processing time for our MDE
contractors;

* 74,896 have been completed by the Department's MDE contractors and are now in
process at the CPS; and

* 63,268 have been at our MDE contractors for longer than seven business days.
