1996-97 FAFSA Processing

PublicationDate: 6/12/96
Summary: 1996-97 FAFSA Processing
Author: CPS - Central Processing System (CPS)

June 12, 1996

The Department has resolved an issue involving the processing of 1996-97 initial
applications and corrections that have equal amounts for student's and/or
parent's Adjusted Gross Income (field numbers 55 and 67) and Total from
Worksheet # 3 (field numbers 64 and 76). Until recently, transactions processed
with the same value for both of these fields were returned with an assumed Total
from Worksheet # 3 of zero. ED previously recommended filing a professional
judgment on the student record as a resolution. This workaround will no longer
be necessary.

As of June 7, 1996, the Central Processing System (CPS) has implemented a
modification to its edits, and CPS now accepts equal values for AGI and Income
from Worksheet # 3 without overriding whatever value is listed for Worksheet # 3.

Users will need to verify the amounts listed for AGI and Income from Worksheet
# 3 in a correction and submit it for processing. The CPS will then accept the
Worksheet # 3 amount and not assume zero.
