Summary: This letter announces Federal Student Aid’s instructor-led, online training sessions designed to assist foreign schools with the transition to the Direct Loan Program.

Dear Colleague:

We are pleased to announce a series of instructor-led, online training sessions designed to assist foreign schools with the transition to the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program. The webinar series will focus on key aspects of awarding and reporting loans made at foreign schools under the Direct Loan Program, and will provide participants with a similar experience to the training workshops that were conducted at various international locations in June 2010.

The online training consists of six two-hour webinar modules, presented over a six-day period. The complete series of six webinars will provide participants with information equivalent to the three-day in-person training workshops. We encourage trainees to register for the modules that best fit their needs.

The online training sessions will cover the following topics at the stated day and time:

  • The module “Difference Between FFEL and Direct Loans and Determining Student Eligibility” will examine the differences between the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and Direct Loan programs. The session will also use the FAA Access to CPS Online Web site to view an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR), make a correction, and determine a student’s eligibility to receive a Direct Loan. This webinar will be offered on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. (ET).
  • The module “Calculating Award Amounts” will review the role of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and how to calculate loan amounts for both students and parents. This webinar will be offered on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. (ET).
  • The module “Direct Loan Programmatic Primer” will focus on the Direct Loan Program from a programmatic perspective. Concepts, terminology, and other information needed to understand how the program works and interacts with the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System will be introduced, and how to manage and administer the program at a school will be discussed. This webinar will be offered on Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. (ET).
  • The module “Originating Loans with the Direct Loan Tool and Using the COD System” will describe how to originate Direct Loans using the new streamlined, Web-based Direct Loan Origination Tool we have developed for foreign schools. Recording disbursements using the COD System Action Queue Screens will be described, as well as how to use the COD System to research and resolve issues. This webinar will be offered on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. (ET).
  • The module “Cash Management and Reconciliation” will provide information about cash management requirements including requesting funds, the timeframes for disbursing funds, and monthly reconciliation. This webinar will be offered on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. (ET).
  • The module “Return of Title IV Funds and Using NSLDS” will describe the process by which Direct Loan funds must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education using the Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) worksheets for foreign schools. Use of the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to review a student’s borrowing history, report student data, and monitor transfer students will also be discussed. This webinar will be offered on Thursday, August 26, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. (ET).

Advance registration is required for this training and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once registered, we will send an e-mail confirmation to the trainee. The trainee should retain this confirmation, as it contains important information, including linking and log in information for the Web site, system test links, and cancellation information. If unable to attend, we request that the trainee cancel his or her registration so that individuals who wish to attend may do so.

PowerPoint slides will be available for each trainee to download after he or she signs in to the webinar. During the webinar, trainees will be able to ask questions electronically using their computers.
