Summary: This letter announces Federal Student Aid’s recorded training session on calculating Federal Pell Grant (Pell Grant) awards for students enrolled in clock-hour programs.

Dear Colleague:

We are pleased to announce the availability of a recorded training session that provides detailed information about calculating Pell Grant awards for students enrolled in clock-hour programs. This one-hour training session is intended for financial aid administrators at clock-hour institutions with a beginning to intermediate level of knowledge of Pell Grant calculations using Formula 4.

The recorded training session includes the following information:

  • Overview of student eligibility criteria for Pell Grants

  • Review of concepts and terms specific to awarding Pell Grants for clock-hour programs, including academic program eligibility, clock hour, academic year, award year, Scheduled Award, annual award, and cost of attendance

  • Discussion of payment period structure and how to take into account different lengths of payment periods, including crossover payment periods

  • Examination of the regulatory effect of transfer and reentry students, excused absences, payment period progression, and payment period disbursements

  • Step-by-step walkthrough of Formula 4

  • Guidance on changes related to the Higher Education Opportunity Act (the HEOA), Pub. L. 110-315, including the year-round Pell Grant, maximum duration of Pell Grant eligibility, and maximum Pell for children of deceased members of the military
