Subject: Live Internet Webinar - Direct Loan Tools

Summary: This letter announces Federal Student Aid’s instructor-led, online training sessions on Direct Loan Tools.

Dear Colleague:

We are pleased to announce instructor-led, online training on the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (DL) Tools for Windows supplemental software product for Direct Loan participants. DL Tools is available for download on our Federal Student Aid Download (FSAdownload) Web site, located at https://www.fsadownload.ed.gov. The training is intended for individuals on the financial aid staff and other staff at Direct Loan schools who are responsible for reconciling their school’s Direct Loan records with the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System.

This training will focus on the many uses of DL Tools in the management and administration of Direct Loans. We will cover the following functionality provided by this multi-year Windows-based application:

  • Comparing the School Account Statement (SAS) to loans and actual disbursements recorded in EDExpress or an external file, and/or compare the SAS to the DL Tools Cash database.

  • Printing the SAS in a readable format.

  • Tracking Cash Receipts (drawdowns) and Refunds of Cash.

  • Rebuilding Direct Loan origination and disbursement records in EDExpress for Windows using an automated process.

  • Running the Disbursement Measurement Tool Report to help monitor Direct Loan records in an EDExpress database.

Note: This training will cover uses of DL Tools by both EDExpress and non-EDExpress uses.

We will present this information in a 90-minute session and will offer the session on three different days to provide ample opportunity for those interested in attending.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 10:00 A.M. (ET)

  • Thursday, August 13, 2009, 1:00 P.M. (ET)

  • Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 3:00 P.M. (ET)

Note: There may be a difference between a trainee’s local time and Eastern Time. To determine local time and its Eastern Time zone equivalent, click on this link:

Advance registration is required for this training and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, click on this link:

Once registered, we will send an e-mail confirmation to the trainee. The trainee should retain this confirmation, as it contains important information, including linking and log in information for the Web site, system test links, and cancellation information. If unable to attend, we request that the trainee cancel his or her registration so that individuals who wish to attend may do so.

PowerPoint slides will be available for each trainee to download after he or she signs in to the webinar. During the webinar, trainees will be able to ask questions electronically using their computers.

We look forward to your participation in this instructor-led, online training opportunity. If you have questions about this training opportunity, please contact Craig Rorie at craig.rorie@ed.gov.
