SUMMARY: This letter is a follow-up to Action Letter #1 posted to IFAP in July 2000. It discusses the 2001-2002 Renewal Application process, including the upcoming release of SFAs newest standalone PC product called Renewal Applications for Windows 2001-2002, Version 1.0. This letter also provides step-by-step instructions and tips to schools wishing to request electronic files and/or printed materials for the 2001-2002 Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (Renewal FAFSA) process.
In July 2000, the Department of Education published Action Letter #1 (GEN-00-10) on the IFAP Web page (https:ifap.ed.gov), which described the major changes and available options for the 2001-2002 Renewal FAFSA process. This letter is a companion to Action Letter #1. It provides specific instructions on the Renewal Application Destination (RAD) data request options available to schools for 2001-2002 and the instructions for submitting a RAD request.
We also wish to announce the development of SFAs Renewal Application software. Renewal Application for Windows 2001-2002, Version 1.0, is a standalone PC application that allows you to submit RAD requests and to import and print the Renewal Applications for distribution to your students. The software will be available on the Departments SFAdownload Web site
(http://www.fsadownload.ed.gov) in October. We have included information on the software in the procedures for requesting renewal application data (Enclosure B). We will provide more detailed information on the functionality of the software in the Installation Guide and Cover Letter that will be released with the software.
About this Action Letter
This Action Letter contains several enclosures that provide important information about the 2001-2002 RAD request process:
Enclosure A is a schedule of important dates in the 2001-2002 RAD process;
Enclosure B provides basic information on available RAD request options, your responsibilities and obligations if you participate in the RAD request process, and customer service numbers and information (this same information for the standalone software will be included with the softwares documentation);
Enclosure C is a chart that summarizes the RAD options available to schools;
Enclosure D explains how to access On-Line Query to submit your RAD request;
Enclosure E provides a summary of the steps for requesting RAD information via CPS On-Line Query;
Enclosure F lists helpful hints for creating successful RAD requests by SSN (Type 2 Individual RAD Records) over the network;
Enclosure G is a description of potential RAD request reject reasons and how to resolve them; and
Enclosure H provides the 2001-2002 RAD request record layouts for Type 2 network requests.
If you have not already done so, you should read Action Letter #1. Action Letter #1 provided a detailed description of the 2001-2002 Renewal FAFSA options, a Q&A section addressing common questions about the Renewal FAFSA process, and the selection criteria students must meet to qualify for a 2001-2002 Renewal FAFSA. By following the instructions in Action Letter #1 and this letter, you can successfully obtain Renewal FAFSA data for your students.
