SUBJECT: Low-Income School and Teacher Shortage Area Lists for Loan Cancellation/Deferment now available on the Web.

Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to announce a helpful new database feature for student loan borrowers that has been added to our Teacher Service Options Web pages found at:

www.ed.gov/studentaid

Borrowers may now use the Teacher Service Options area of the Web site to search the Department’s official low-income school listing for the 1998-99 school year. (As the Web site explains, Perkins Loan borrowers who are teaching full-time at a designated low-income elementary or secondary school may qualify for cancellation of a portion of their loan.) The Web site gives borrowers the option to search by state as well as school name or school district.

The Teacher Service Options site also includes a listing of Teacher Shortage Areas that are eligible for deferment of Direct Loans and Federal Family Education Loans. To go directly to these listings,
go to www.ed.gov/offices/OPE/Students/repayment/teachers/perkins.html for the Perkins low-income school list or www.ed.gov/
offices/OPE/Students/repayment/teachers/dlffel.html
for the Teacher Shortage Area list.

We hope that you find both of these Web pages to be useful resources.

Sincerely,

Diane E. Rogers
Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary
